"This installation package could not be opened" error

If you receive the following message (or similar) when installing ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus 3.0;

"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

The Windows Installer service may need to be restarted or repaired. The Windows Installer service adds, modifies, and removes any applications which are provided as an .msi package. If this service is disabled, any services that depend on it will fail to start.

To resolve the error, see the step-by-step instructions below:

  1. Verify that the Window Installer service is running—click Start Run , type services.msc and click OK (Windows Vista users: Click Start, type services.msc and press ENTER).
  2. Locate the Windows Installer service, right-click on it and select Properties. Select Automatic from the Startup type drop-down and click Start.

  3. Click OK and try the installation again. If you receive the same error message, the Windows Installer service could be corrupted. Please see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article for assistance in repairing the Windows Installer service: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346
